Learning in Community
For singers, part of the attraction of choral singing comes from the challenge – and the fun – of learning music together. Countless rehearsal hours go into one evening’s performance – hours of work on details, technique, and artistic vision. From this process comes a strong sense of common purpose.
A choir is like a community, and sustaining this community is an ongoing experience of learning and renewed commitment. We come together as a choir not just to sing but because every week we have the chance to learn and grow as singers and members of this communal experience.
In one sense, we sing first for ourselves, as individuals and as a community of singers. Yet we also sing to share our love of great music with others, in that visceral moment of creating a choral experience that gives meaning and hope to our lives.
Creativity and Transformation
Members of the choir are vocal and choral artists who channel their passions for music and creativity into the work of the group. The arts and music matter because they make it possible to create meaning for families and communities. The choir exists for the pure joy it brings to our community and to give form to the human passion for expression and meaning.
The Planning Process
In the summer of 2007, at the request of the Chair, a committee from the Board of Directors met to review the previous strategic plan which had been approved in January of 2005. This group reviewed the goals and objectives of the prior plan and assessed the accomplishments of the choir since its adoption. The group also made suggestions as to what still required or deserved attention.
The committee was then joined by a group of members from the choir to address strategies that would continue the growth and artistic quality of the organization. A series of meetings was scheduled with a professional planner during which a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis was conducted and a set of objectives developed in support of a revised version of the Vision and Mission of the organization.
These objectives have been fashioned into an activity matrix which follows. The individual tasks have been assigned to committees or task forces which are made up of board members along with additional volunteers drawn from the choir and from within the greater community.
Evaluation and Assessment
The action steps laid out for each objective allow the organization—board, staff, and choir—to determine priorities at the start of each fiscal year. The vision is directed into a series of steps and tasks that provide a roadmap for growth and improvement.
To ensure proper evaluation of these tasks against the goals, the plan will be evaluated at the end of each fiscal year and adjustments made for future activity. The board will take responsibility for evaluating the overall direction of the plan and for delegating parts of the plan to others in the organization to generate more detailed assessment and analysis.
