ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR

Job Posting: Artistic Director and Conductor

Following the retirement of long-time Artistic Director Thomas W. Douglas after 22 years of leadership, the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh (BCP) is seeking a creative and versatile successor to lead the ensemble into its next chapter.

Position Type: Part-Time (July 1, 2027)
Salary Range: $22,000 – $30,000

Position Overview
The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh is a volunteer, auditioned choral ensemble of approximately 70 singers dedicated to high-quality, artistically ambitious music. Founded in 1934, the Choir has evolved from its roots in the works of J.S. Bach to perform diverse musical genres and create unique musical experiences.
We are looking for a visionary leader to grow the ensemble musically, expand our reach, and strengthen our footprint in the Pittsburgh arts community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Artistic Leadership: Provide overall artistic direction to the BCP and its musicians.
  • Season Planning: Develop the repertoire and venues for three sets of two concerts per season (September through May) in collaboration with the Board and Executive Director.
  • Rehearsal & Performance: Supervise and lead all weekly rehearsals, sectionals, dress rehearsals, and concerts, including run-out and ensemble performances.
  • Personnel Management: Conduct auditions to select choir members and identify a core group of professional singers for voice-part leadership.
    Staff Selection: Select all artistic personnel, including soloists and the Associate Conductor.
    Instruction: Provide musical guidance during rehearsals to help members achieve their best possible performance.
    Marketing & Development: Collaborate on the preparation of season artwork and program books.
    Sustainability: Participate in fundraising activities and the preparation of grant applications.

Qualifications

  • Conducting Experience: Demonstrated success conducting choral ensembles, with a preference for experience leading adult groups.
  • Musical Breadth: Broad knowledge of choral repertoire and various performance styles beyond classical works.
  • Technical Proficiency: Detailed knowledge of both instrumental and choral performance elements.
  • Artistic Drive: A deep-seated passion for music and choral excellence.

Skills and Competencies

  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with a Board of Directors and executive staff.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to engage with volunteer singers, professionals, and the public.
  • Organization: Superior organizational skills to manage a complex performance season.
  • Leadership: The ability to mentor a core group of professional singers while fostering the growth of volunteer members.

Education

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in music, conducting, music education, or a related field.
  • Preferred: An advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in a music-related discipline.
